3rd Annual Rig Gig
& Trailer Backing Clinic
Saturday, September 16, 2023
FENCE, Tryon, NC

Think of it as a rodeo for horse trailers. Everyone thinks they can park a horse trailer … until they have to do it.

Straight.

Without hitting anything.

With a crowd cheering.

And fast.

Do you Curse in Reverse?
It’s time to Shut-up and Back-up!

To take the ‘Cursing out of your Reversing’, Rig Gig day opens with a trailer backing clinic hosted by Foothills Riding Club taught by professional driver Steve Loheac* who will help refine your trailer backing skills and offer helpful safety tips. A limited number of attendees may get one-on-one instruction or audit the clinic. The clinic begins at 2:00 p.m. Participants and attendees may also enter the Rig Gig.
*Instructor may be changed, contingent on schedule conflict.

The Rig Gig competition will follow the clinic at 4:30 p.m. Drivers compete against the clock on a course with curves and turns, and obstacles that results in penalties if hit. The course concludes at a parking stall where the test of closest to the cone in the best time determines the prize winners

The prize money is nice but bragging rights are better. And the trophies, well, you’ve never seen anything like it - let’s just say they are highly coveted.

There are two categories; bumper pull and gooseneck. Drivers supply their rigs - no passengers and no livestock - not even your barn cat. Enter one or both categories. Top three places will be awarded in both categories;

1st place $200
2nd Place $150
3rd Place $100

If you’re the cheer and jeer type you’re in for a fun show.
Gates open at 1:30
Clinic 2:00 - 4:30
Rig Gig 4:30 - 6:00

Trophies and cash prizes will be presented at the Awards Party.

Rig Gig Driver Entry Information

Rig Gig Drivers may enter the staging area at 3:00 pm to check in and take their place in the queue. Releases use be completed.

The course will begin at the west end of the former steeplechase track and drivers will negotiate the course designated by traffic cones and various obstacles and conclude by backing in a designated space at an existing power and water hook-up. Drivers may familiarize themselves by walking the course. The competition will have a judge observing for penalties and verifying times.

A scoreboard will post the driver and their time.

Tied scores will run-off immediately after the last entry in each class.

Trophies and cash prizes will be awarded to the first three places in each category (Gooseneck and Bumper pull)

There must be at least two entries in each category to award trophies or cash prizes (i.e. one does not a competition make)

Rules of Completition

The driver will navigate the course alone - they may NOT have a passenger or animal in the truck or trailer.

The corse is approved by a professional driver. There will be an audible “start” by the timer.

Drivers may get out of their vehicle to view their proximity to obstacles or final parking space.

The driver will signal the completion of their contest by cutting their engine and honking their horn to stop the clock.

The judge will determine if the driver loaded straight and without penalty.

Five-second deductions will be made to final time for contact with any obstacle.

The official time will be recorded on the scoreboard.

This is a friendly competition, however, the judge will review and resolve any disputes.

Drivers may enter both Gooseneck and Bumper Pull categories.
